The story of this Wimbledon is the 15 years old Cori Gauff who ousted Venus Williams in the first and extended her dream run by beating Ryberikova in the second. Will she extend it further by winning the third?
Victoria Azarenka has found her form in time for the third round match against Simona Halep, and Karolina Pliskova, our favorite for the 2019 Wimbledon, is winning her matches without any fuss and slated to meet Hsieh in the third.
Elina Svitolina, seeded 8 at Wimbledon, caught a lucky break with Margarita Gasparyan retiring in the second, after winning the first. Elina will now face the 23 years old, and 31 ranked, Greek – Maria Sakkari, who ousted, the 20 years old, Marie Bouzkova 6-4, 6-1, in her second round. Maria made the 3rd round at Wimbledon in 2017 and is playing well enough to challenge Svitolina and win the third.
Conclusion: Maria Sakkari over Elina Svitolina in three.
Karolina Pliskoa, our favorite, routed the Olympics’ gold medal winner, Monica Puig, 6-0, 6-4 and will face Su-Wei Hsieh in the third. Pliskova fired 9 aces and 23 winners, compared to 1 and 7 by Monica. If Monica continues to serve the way she has, in her first two matches, we believe she should get past the 33 years old Hsieh and into the fourth, which, incidentally, is her best showing at the Championships.
Conclusion: Karolina Pliskova over Su-Wei Hsieh in straight.
Victoria Azarenka and Simona Halep are 2-2 against each-other, but Victoria hasn’t beaten Simona since 2012, whereas, Simona ousted Victoria, in straight sets, in the fourth at the 2017 Wimbledon Championships. Victoria, however, is playing better now and we expect the match to be much closer and give Azarenka the edge this time around.
Conclusion: Victoria Azarenka over Simona Halep in three closely fought sets.
Cori Gauff is the story of the tournament this year, so far. She ousted Venus Williams in the first and followed it up with an easy 6-3, 6-3 decimation of, the 30 years old Slovenian, Magdalena Ryberikova who made the Wimbledon semi-finals in 2017. The 15 years old, Cori, is enjoying a dream run here, but Polona Hercog, who made the third round of Wimbledon in 2017, is playing well enough to end the fairy tale run of Cori Gauff. Polona Hercog took care of Madison Keys with an easy 6-2, 6-4 win in the second. Madison, for the ill-informed, has been a finalist at the US Open, semi-finalist at the Australian and French, and quarter-finalist at the 2015 Wimbledon Championships.
Conclusion: Polona Hercog over Cori Gauff in three.
