Alexander Zverev retained the third spot in the ATP rankings by walloping Alex De Minaur 6-2, 6-4 to win the Citi Open. While Sascha won the match, he was supposed to win as the top seed, Juna Martin Del Potro, on the other hand, was upset by the talented Fabio Fognini 6-2, 6-4 at the Mifel Open final in Los Cabos, Mexico. The 128th ranked Svetlana Kuznetsova, on the other hand, revived her career by beating Donna Vekic 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2 to win the Citi Open.
Del Potro not only lost an opportunity to secure the third rank in the ATP but also win his third title, besides Indian Wells and Acapulco, for this season. Fabio Fognini, on the other hand, narrowed his head-to-head to 2-3 against Del Potro and won his third title of the season.
Alexander Zverev had a tough Citi Open. Not only was he the defending champion with its pressures and responsibilities but also played his brother Mischa in the second round. He, like the others, also had to deal with the incessant rains which wreaked havoc during the tournament and disrupted the playing schedule to everyone’s disadvantage. Sascha, however, like a true champion defended his crown while establishing his dominance over the two up and coming 19 years old, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alex De Minaur.
Alex De Minaur has a never say die attitude on the court and runs and picks every ball. He is very quick on his feet and takes a big cut on the ball on the returns and from behind the baseline. He doesn’t give up until the last point is over. He is as tough as they come, and Sascha knew and was prepared to face him.
Alexander Zverev played well and didn’t let the points drag on for too long this time around. We, however, feel that he needs to shorten the points further and leverage his powerful baseline ground shots to move into the court and towards the net to close sooner.
Svetlana Kuznetsova was ranked 128th at the start of the Citi Open, and a had been until her three-set win over Donna Vekic over the weekend. They were 1-1 prior to the match, but Donna was the higher ranked between them.
Kuznetsova’s saved four match points to win the title. She was the lowest seed to go home with the biggest prize at this year’s Citi Open.
