Nadal is a winning machine. The juggernaut that just doesn’t stop. He decimated Kyrgios 6-2, 6-1 for another title this year and now leads both Federer and Zverev in title count for 2017.
This part of the year is quite unspectacular for Nadal, and he is known to under-perform after the US Open. Therefore, it is a positive development for Nadal that he is doing well in the fall season too. And, good luck to Roger, Novak, and Andy because in his current form Nadal can probably beat all three together on the other side of the net! In his post-match interview, Kyrgios himself admitted that Nadal destroyed him in the match. With this victory, Nadal is certain to end the year as number one. Federer, his closest competition for the number one slot, has neither the inclination nor the strength to pursue the bull.
On the women’s circuit, Caroline Garcia beat the new world number one Simona Halep 6-4, 7-6 (3) to win her second title in as many weeks. Caroline had lost her last two matches against Halep and was not the favorite to win this one. The Beijing title, coupled with the Wuhan trophy last week, will propel Caroline into the rarefied and sought after top ten slot.
Elsewhere in Tokyo, Japan, David Goffin beat Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 7-5, and like Caroline Garcia, to win his second title in as many weeks. Adrian was coming off a spectacular win over Marin Cilic but just could not keep up with David’s consistency. This win was Goffin’s fourth title and marked Mannarino’s fourth runner-up the finish. David is now ranked eighth in the race to qualify for the year-end tournament in London.
