Karolina Pliskova should not be doing so well on Singapore’s slow court. However, she has taken care of her matches quite effortlessly so far.
Her first against Venus Williams was a pretty one-sided affair and the against Garbine Muguruza today was equally smooth with a scoreline of 6-2, 6-2 in Pliskova’s favor. She is now 2-0 in her group and is assured a berth in the semi-final round. So why is Karolina doing gangbusters when the other ball basher like Muguruza, Venus Williams, and Jelena Ostapenko are struggling in Singapore?
Caroline Wozniacki believes that the court is playing very slow except on flatter shots, which are skidding off the surface. Karolina, as we know, hits flat ground shots and possesses a giant serve which can win her a few easy points.
Venus struggled to close her match against Jelena Ostapenko. Their match, which lasted over three hours, was won in three sets by Venus, and was marked by a horrendous display of service by both players. Jelena dropped her serve eleven, and Venus nine, times. Venus will play Garbine Muguruza next, and their last encounter at Wimbledon this year was won by Muguruza.
The court is tailor-made for the grinders, and it’d be interesting to watch Pliskova’s performance against either Simona Halep or Caroline Wozniacki in the semifinals.
