The Red Group consisting of grinders and counter-punchers like Simona Halep, Elina Svitolina, and Caroline Wozniacki is in its element on the slow court at the WTA Finals in Singapore.
Caroline Garcia is perhaps the odd girl out in the Red Group who has a well rounded all court game with a good enough serve. She had painted the WTA circuit red with her consecutive titles in the Asian circuit just two weeks ago. However, she fell miserably short of matching Simona Halep’s retrieving and grinding prowess on the very slow, wood-based, deco-turf in Singapore. Just when it seemed that talent had finally figured out grind, in the Beijing win recently, Caroline Garcia went down 6-4, 6-2 in the match and 3-1 in their head-to-head record.
Even Elina Svitolina, the counter puncher, was little match for the Caroline Wozniacki, the queen of grinders, here. Wozniacki decimated Svitolina 6-2, 6-0 in less than an hour, and finally secured her first win against Elina in her fourth try. Elina had dominated Caroline in their last two encounters in Dubai and Toronto, but Wozniacki not only turned the tables on Elina here but also returned the bagel she had been gifted, in Toronto.
Wozniacki even hit three aces and an overall 16 winners compared to 10 from her opponent. However, many of those winners were a result of carefully constructed rallies and not shot-making or one-two punches.
