Just yesterday Murray was crowned Wimbledon champion for the second time in his life, his third Grand Slam title. It was a straight set victory for the Scot, 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-2).
While Roanic played to the best of ability, rushing to the net, going for sizzling winners, and even firing the fastest serve of the tournament at 147mph which Murray deftly returned with his instinctive reflexes, Murray was not about to let this opportunity go, especially after losing the Australian Open final for the fifth time earlier this year, and then losing to Novak in the French. Just like Roanic said, “You know he’ll get returns back,” which is exactly what Murray did, chasing down ball after ball, and putting the pressure on Roanic’s serve, something that Federer was unable to do.
Since Murray was able to hold his own service games, it became easier for him to put the pressure on Roanic’s serve which wasn’t as effective as it could have been because of the breezy conditions, not only giving him many break point chances, but also enough break point conversions.A perfect example would be the third set tiebreak where Roanic was broken early, and went down 6-1.
It also seemed that Murray had a better control on his temper. Yes, there was the (more than) occasional outburst of frustration, shouting here and there, but gone was the long strings of profanities that he used to direct to his box (probably because Lendl was sitting there) , and racquet throwing was practically non-existent, except when he threw his racquet into the crowd after becoming Wimbledon’s new champion.
Lendl hopefully finally smiled, and I’m sure Murray’s mom is ecstatic, celebrating with champagne and with her son who says that ” I’m going to make sure I enjoy this one (Wimbledon victory).”
With Lendl back in his box, a lucky charm for Murray who has won all three of his Grand Slam titles with Lendl by his side, I look forward to what Murray will offer at the U.S Open.
