Margaret Court Feeling the Heat After Anti-Gay Stance

Margaret Court recently wrote an open letter to The West Australian that she would not longer fly Qantas because of the airline’s support of gay marriage.

In fact Court wrote “I am disappointed that Qantas has become an active promoter for same-sex marriage.” Margaret is facing backlash from her fellow athletes, who are openly expressing their disgust with Court’s comments.
In fact, Martina Navratilova has already spoken out against Court’s statements, and has even called for authorities to change the name of Margaret Court Arena. “Maybe it’s time to change the name of the Margaret Court Arena then… and I guess Margaret will be taking the boat on her next trip?:)” Navratilova says in a tweet.
The heat doesn’t stop there. Australian player Casey Dellacqua tweeted “Margaret. Enough is enough.”
However, it doesn’t seem like there is about to be any action against Margaret’s words. Victorian Minister for Sport John Eren has been quoted saying “At this point in time, I don’t know whether they (Tennis Australia and Melbourne Parks Trust) are going to go down that path at this point in time.”
“The arena is named Margaret Court because of her abilities on the court, not off the court.

“She’s made some comments which we (the Labor Government) don’t see eye-to-eye with. These are decisions that need to be made by Tennis Australia and Melbourne Parks Trust.”

Margaret is known for her strict Christian principles, and is even a Christian Pastor.

While athletes have been openly expressing their discontent with Court’s statements, officials haven’t quite been showing the same response.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull delivered a neither here not there response to questions regarding Margaret’s statements.

“Whatever people think of her opinion on gay marriage, she is one of the all time greats and the arena celebrates that,” Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull stated.

As the issue and debate grew in size, Navratilova even tweeted ” thank you Qantas for your support. And Margaret – you have gone too far. Shame on you…” and “Evonne Goolagong Cawley Arena is a mouthful, but it gets my vote:). For all the right reasons.”

Both Navratilova and Billie Jean King have criticized  Margaret’s views several times in the past, and do not seem to be anywhere close to giving up their fight.
