Kevin Anderson and Alexander Zverev in the finals at the Citi Open

Both Kevin Anderson and Alexander Zverev seem quite hungry for the Citi Open title

Alexander Zverev beats the world number 9 Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-4 in the Citi Open semi finals in Washington.

In the finals, the fifth seed will play Kevin Anderson who beat Jack Sock 6-3, 6-4 in the other semi-final. Zverev will be competing for his fifth title in the finals and has played superbly this week so far.  Against Nishikori, he dominated with his serve and powerful ground shots from the baseline and was never at risk of losing a set let alone the match.

Alexander Zverev feels good about his performance

“I played a great match. I played well from the baseline. I returned pretty well… I was holding serve quite comfortably, so I’m happy with how I played,” Zverev said. About Kevin Anderson, he said, “He’s playing unbelievable tennis. He won against Dominic in a great match. He beat Jack today, it’s going to be a tough final. If I can play as well as I did today, hopefully, I can get out with a win.”

Alexander Zverev is the real deal, and Kei could not manage to escape like the way he did against Paul by saving three match points in his quarterfinals match.

Kevin Anderson had a tough ride to the finals

Kevin Anderson had finished the year as the twelfth best player in the world in 2015 and won the Memphis, Winston-Salem, and Queen’s Club tournaments.  He was plagued by a left knee, right shoulder, and an ankle problem in 2016. In this tournament, however, he gradually regained form to eliminate Dominic Thiem in a three set hard fought quarter-finals encounter, and then took out Sock in the semi-finals. Sock had been playing well and had also won Auckland and Delray Beach earlier this year.

The finals between Anderson and Zverev is sure to be exciting as both players are big servers and in form.
