Roger Federer defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-3, 6-3 to set up an encounter with David Goffin in the finals of the NOVENTI Open in Halle. The Maestro is bidding for an unprecedented 10th title at this event, but faces an in form David Goffin who downed, the red hot, Matteo Berrettini 7-6 (4), 6-3 in his semifinal.
Gilles Simon survived a, two hours and thirty-eight minutes, marathon three setter against Daniil Medvedev to prevail 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals at the Queen’s Club Championship in West Kensington, London. He will face Feliciano Lopez who defeated, the fast-rising Canadian, Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-4 in the other semifinal.
Andy Murray made a wise decision, to team up with Feliciano Lopez, in his comeback event at the Queen’s Club Championships. Feliciano Lopez not only defeated the fast-rising Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in the single’s semifinal match, but also partnered Andy Murray to take down Daniel Evans and Ken Skupski in the quarters, before defeating Henri Kontinen and John Peers in another thrilling semifinal on a busy Saturday.
Auger Aliassime fired 68 aces in just four matches at the Queen’s Club and 25 of those were launched against Lopez in the semifinal. Lopez, the 37 year old tour’s veteran, triumphed in the battle of the ages against the 18 years old Aliassime. The victory, however, was not easy and Aliassime even saved 4 match points in the third at 3-5 and 0-40.
Gilles Simon came through a tough three-setter in the semifinal against Daniil Medvedev. Lopez has won all four of the grass court meetings against Simon in the past, and enjoys a 5-2 head-to-head record against the Frenchman.
Feliciano Lopez is on fire at the Queen’s Club and in the battle of the 37 years old Lopez against 34 years old Gilles Simon, we give the edge to Lopez.
Roger Federer is 7-1 against David Goffin and is playing well on his turf in Halle. David Goffin, however, is a dangerous player and played even more aggressive than Roger the only time he beat him. Goffin has improved considerably through the tournament and cannot be taken lightly by Federer. Federer, on the other hand, is 67-7 in Halle and is en-route to his, personal best, 10th title at Halle.
We’d give the Maestro a slight edge in the match. Federer could win his 102nd title here and edge closer to Jimmy Connor’s record of 109 tour level titles.
