Brady and Halep win titles over the weekend, then Halep announced she would not play the US Open 2020. Simona was unsure of playing the US Open from before. Participating in a a clay court was also a giveaway of her intent to avoid the US Open this year.
Brady was in devastating form in her 6-3, 6-4 victory over Jill Teichmann in Lexington. The Lexington win earned her the first WTA title, and she did not drop a set en route to the title. The Pennsylvania native hits big and serves even bigger. Her forehand is a point ender and she can always depend on that big first serve in tight moments. She also appears fitter and leaner now, and a little more consistent than before. Her ground shots carry ample top-spin and pace to cause damage without aiming for the lines.
“She has power,” Paul Annacone said on Sunday, “but she also has margin on her shots.”

Jennifer is thrilled with the first WTA title at 25. She always had the goods but lacked consistency. The win in Lexington came in a loaded draw with the big guns in the WTA. The Lexington draw showcased Serena, Venus, Sabalenka, as well as Gauff, but Brady walked home with the trophy at the end.
Halep overcame the gritty Belgian Elise Merten 6-2, 7-5 to lift the Prague Open title over the weekend. It was Simona’s first clay court title since the French Open win in 2018! She also won her last event in Dubai this year. The Prague title is the 21st title of her career. And, only Serna, Venus, Clijster, and Kvitova among the active players own more titles than her.
