5 Men’s First Round Matches to Look Out For
The French Open has begun and the favorites are all set to stake their claim to the second slam of the year. However, the first few rounds are always treacherous and entertaining, and the possibilities of upsets abound in the early stages of a slam.
Thiem vs. Tomic
Thiem leads the head to head 1-0, but this match was on hard court, so we can expect an almost completely different type of match on clay. Thiem has not only beaten Rafa but also won 7 of his last ten matches, all of which were only clay, while Tomic has only won 3 matches on clay this season. However, Tomic could cause a major upset if Thiem is unable to keep his head in the game when he faces the pressure of being a strong contender, or if Tomic is able to pull out his ‘A’ game. Tomic also utilizes a lot of change of pace, which could throw Thiem off, especially on a clay court.
Conclusion: Thiem in 4
Lucas Pouille vs. Julien Benneteau
Pouille leads the head to head 2-1, and has won the only match the pair has played on clay. On the flip side, this match was a 4-setter and was during the 2016 French Open. A whole lot can change during a year, and Benneteau may be able to outsmart his opponent. Pouille has won 7 of his last 10 matches on clay, while Benneteau has won 4 of his last 9 matches on clay. Pouille has just come from two first round match losses in Madrid and Rome, so he may be facing a lack of confidence. Benneteau might just be able to emerge victorious.
Conclusion: Pouille in 4
Zverev vs. Verdasco
Zverev definitely seems to have the upper hand in this match, but if it’s Verdasco’s day, then it could go Verdasco’s way. Their head to head is 1-1, and the last match they played was in Madrid. Although it was straight sets, the match was closer than the score 7-5, 6-3 indicated. Zverev has been having an amazing season, winning 9 of his last 10 matches on clay, and is almost sure to win this match. We will have to see whether Verdasco is able play at a high level, because if he is, things could turn out different than expected.
Conclusion: Zverev in 4
Dustin Brown vs. Gael Monfils
Brown and Monfils have never played each other. Both of them have also been having erratic seasons. The best part about this match is that there will be spectacular energy and shot making. Both of these players are known for hitting the least expected shot at the least expected moment. Expect a variety of drop-shots and slices, winners and unforced errors. This will probably be the most entertaining match you will see the entire tournament.
Conclusion: Monfils in 3
Kyrgios vs. Kohlschreiber
Kyrgios and Kohlschreiber will be playing for the first time this French Open. While Kyrgios has been having a good year, he has only won two matches on clay. On the other hand, Kohlschreiber has won 4 matches on clay so far this season. Kyrgios hasn’t been having a great season on clay, but still should have the capacity to beat Kohlschreiber. It will be close though. Expect a long match, at least a four setter. Unless the old Nick decides to make an appearance, Kyrgios should pull through.
Conclusion: Kyrgios in 4
